Overview

HomeTV is a tvOS app I built for my own living room. It browses Stremio addon catalogs, searches across them, and plays streams in its own player or hands them to Infuse or VLC.

The problem

Stremio has no Apple TV app, so on the TV I had to choose between my addons and a native experience. I wanted something that feels like the Apple TV app but reads from the addons I already use.

What I did

  • Built a Watch Now screen with a hero shelf and one row per addon catalog.
  • Wrote a Stremio client that queries every installed addon for catalogs, search and streams.
  • Built detail pages with backdrops, synopses and episode lists for series.
  • Integrated KSPlayer so MKV and other formats play in-app, falling back from AVPlayer to FFmpeg.
  • Added Infuse and VLC hand-off for streams the built-in player can’t handle.

Outcome

HomeTV runs on my Apple TV, sideloaded from Xcode, and isn’t on the App Store. Building it taught me SwiftUI on tvOS, and that designing for a remote and the focus engine is a different job from designing for touch.
